Laura Zam is the author of The Pleasure Plan: One Woman’s Search for Sexual Healing (HCI Books / Simon & Schuster). She’s also a Certified Trauma Professional, Registered Yoga Teacher, Sexuality Educator, Relationship Coach, and wellness trainer. Laura is the founder of YES! Yoga, a pleasure-based approach to movement and fitness. Her passion is providing information and guidance so others can sexually heal.
Aside from her book, Laura’s writing appears in The New York Times, Salon, HuffPost, Sheknows, NextTribe and many other publications. In 2013, her one-person play about healing in the aftermath of childhood sexual abuse, Married Sex, was presented at the New York International Fringe Festival and Off-Broadway. Other storytelling performances, keynotes, and speeches have been presented at The Kennedy Center, the U.S Holocaust Memorial Museum, Columbia University, American Psychological Association, Verizon, and many other venues in the U.S. and abroad. She is in the process of launching a podcast called Sexual Healing Central. Media outlets that have covered Zam’s work include NPR, The Washington Post, PBS, ABC-TV, Bustle, HuffPost, The Guardian UK, and others.
As a trauma-sensitive educator, Laura has been conducting healing workshops for the past twenty years, working with post-war teens from Bosnia, young adults from the Middle East, wounded soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, and victims of sexual violation. Workshop venues include the Omega Center, Walter Reed Army Hospital, and the DC Rape Crisis Center. As a wellness professional, Laura has been creating and implementing workplace health programs for the past 16 years. Her modalities include meditation, mindfulness, yoga for all bodies, and her own style of movement, YES! Yoga, which is joyful antidote to the rigidity that can set into some exercise regimens.
Grants include a graduate fellowship from Brown University, an Open Society Fund grant connected to post-conflict work in the Balkans, and five fellowships from DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. Laura has taught at Brown University, UC Berkeley, George Mason, and other colleges. She holds an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Brown University, where she studied with Pulitzer Prize winners Paula Vogel and Nilo Cruz. She’s a member of the National Speakers Association and the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists.
